The New 7 Wonder City: Vigan Heritage City
VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur—Residents Vigan City were greatly overwhelmed following the declaration on December 8, 2014 of this heritage city as one the New Seven Wonder Cities (N7WC) of the world.
At about 3:00 a.m. in the Philippines, Bernard Weber, president of the Search for N7WC contest, declared Vigan and six other cities—Beirut, Lebanon; Doha, Qatar; Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Kuala Kumpur, Malaysia; and La Paz, Bolivia—as N7WCs.
The announcement via electronic media was witnessed by the local officials, the local media, tourists and residents, who attended a vigil in front of the Vigan City hall starting December 7, 2014 to wait for the results of the contest.
Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina, along with Governor Ryan Luis Singson and former Governor Luis Chavit Singson, led the vigil.
(After) “15 years (since) Vigan’s inscription in the UNESCO list of World’s Heritage Site and monuments in December 1999; it has been declared as new wonder city of the world. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, we have been blessed with another distinct stature,” she said.
The mayor expressed her thanks to all the Filipino people all over the worlds as well as the global residents who supported Vigan to win the N7WC.
“This is inspiring; it is a tribute to a people who has committed to achieve development and make wonderful things in their lives and in their community even radiating beyond boundaries,” she said.
About 1,200 cities from 220 nations all participated in the contest.
